Anna's Hummingbird
These delightful little birds have been individually developed from a hand carved original. They are pure porcelain, and are fired 3 times with carefully hand painted glaze applications to produce the colours and iridescence of the Anna's Hummingbird, frequently seen on coastal Vancouver Island. They are mounted on a 3" high driftwood stump, sourced locally and responsibly.
About Anna’s Hummingbird (Calypte anna)
Official bird of the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
It is native to western coastal regions of North America and is named after Anna Massena, a 19th century French duchess. These birds must eat twice their body weight in nectar and insects daily to survive. They are frequently seen on Vancouver island in backyards and parks, and commonly found at feeders and flowering plants all throughout the year. They fly at 80 km per hour and their wings beat about 40-50 times per second during flight. The nest is slightly bigger than a walnut, and the eggs are about the size of a small jellybean!
